Panchmahal |
The
history of Panchamahal district moves around the city of Champaner.
Champaner was established in the seventh century ( 647 ) in the state of
king Vanaraj, the first Anahil Bhan king. By the end of the thirteenth
century ( 1297 ) Chauhans became the owner of this state by releasing it
from the control of Muslims under the glance of Allauddin Khilji. In
the year 1484 A. D. Mohammad Begada had conquered Champaner, until then
their rule continued. The author Mirat – E - Sikandari has praised this
state very much. Lots of Mangoes and the sandalwood, which can be used
in household was produced in the whole state. During the Mughal Sultanat
( 1575 to 1727 ), Godhara became the head quarter of the district. It seems that in the year 1727 A. D. son of Kantaji Kadam Bande, Krishnaji attacked on Champaner, levied taxes and ruled the state in the middle years of the century. Thereafter Champaner was attached to Sindhiya. The fort of Pavagadh was seized by the British but they did not try to seize the regions of the state or its rule. This fort was also handed over to the Sindhiyas next year only and it was under their control till 1853 when it was returned to the British. In the year 1858 in a failed revolt, the tribal community, Nayaka, under the leadership of Rupa and Kamal Nayaka had raised arms against the British rule. During the British rule Panchamahal was the part of the Mumbai State. On the day, 1 – 5 – 1960 the Mumbai State was divided in two parts. As a result Gujarat and Maharashtra, these two states were formed. From this day Panchamahal district is the part of Gujarat state. |
